Mooncake Festival 2020 – Best mooncakes in Singapore

Posted on

We round up our favourite mooncakes in Singapore for the ultimate mooncake shopping guide for Mid-Autumn Festival 2020!

This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls outside September in a rare occurrence — specifically, mooncake festival 2020 in Singapore starts on Oct 1 and ends Oct 8. During these unprecedented times of Covid-19, as with other special occasions, we will all be celebrating our annual traditional mooncake festival a little differently this time.

Forget the usual throngs of crowds making their way through samples and samples of mooncakes at the highly popular Takashimaya Mooncake Fair, or Singaporeans arriving in droves rushing to get the best mooncake deals. Crowd control is real. We’d best just order our favorite mooncakes online, from the comfort of our homes.

For many of us, the mooncake festival signifies family reunion and a time for family gatherings. It is said that the moon is the brightest and the roundest on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. And the main star of the day? Traditional, rich pastries filled with lotus paste, best paired with a pot of hot, aromatic Chinese tea.

A much-anticipated delectable array that includes a mix of classic baked mooncakes and quintessential snowskin mooncake favorites (durian!) would grace the table after dinner to be enjoyed with the whole family.

Here our team has compiled some of the best mooncakes of this year we’ve tried and tasted. Let the joyful gifting and family reunions begin!

1. Peach Garden, for freshly baked classic mooncakes like the Golden Pandan Paste with Charcoal Skin

Usher in the Mid-Autumn festivities with Peach Garden’s traditional handcrafted baked mooncakes. Serving up Cantonese dim sum and cuisine, Peach Garden has long gained a spot in the hearts of Singaporeans, young and old alike. We recommend their classic, baked mooncakes like the Golden Pandan Paste with One Yolk and Signature White Lotus Paste with Macadamia Nuts, which are handmade with reduced sugar. The lotus paste was rich without being cloyingly sweet. Infused with aromatic Pandan and baked in charcoal skin, this one was a bit reminiscent of Pandan kaya desserts.

We also tried their newer, exciting flavours like the Healthy Purple Sweet Potato Paste and the Refreshing Pomelo Cheese Paste with Orange Peel. The Purple Sweet Potato Paste is a much healthier option compared with its sweet lotus paste counterparts, and would make a perfect gift for your MIL — if she digs this sort of thing. The Pomelo Cheese Paste with Orange Peel — savoury cheese paste infused with pomelo puree and a whiff of orange peel — was a crowd pleaser too. Don’t miss this if you love cheese and citrusy desserts.

Price: $58.21 nett for a box of four traditional, freshly baked Signature Golden Pandan Paste with One Yolk (Reduced Sugar) mooncakes (U.P. $72.76). Comes in a cute orange lantern box, or top up $5 for the limited edition giftbox which doubles up as a jewellery organiser after you’re done eating the mooncakes in the box, complete with small mirror and LED lights (!)

2. My Mum’s Cookies, for rich MSW durian mooncakes; healthier naturally sweetened baked mooncakes

My Mum’s Cookies reminds us of the heart-warming tastes and smells of authentic home-baked goodness. We especially love that their freshly baked No Cane Sugar Lotus Mooncakes are made with maltitol, a natural ingredient derived from wheat and corn, and not sugar. Traditional baked mooncakes are usually sugar-laden, so this is a great option for a healthier mooncake option that does not compromise on taste. It also makes a lovely treat for beloved grandparents who need to watch their sugar intake for health reasons.

Another bestseller is their Mao Shan Wang Durian mooncakes. Made of 100% premium Mao Shan Wang flesh, we could see why — their durian mooncakes are richly indulgent, filled with durian pulp in every bite. Fullerton’s Snow Skin mooncakes never fail to impress year after year. Handcrafted by the award-winning Jade Restaurant, this year’s Snow Skin Treasures feature their mooncake rendition of familiar local flavours, like the Yuan Yang Snow Skin and Passion Fruit with Chin Chow Snow Skin.

A must try for all coffee lovers. The Passion Fruit with Chin Chow Snow Skin is their tropical tangy take on another local favourite, Chin Chow drinks and dessert.

Their classic White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk Snow Skin is also worth a mention — the creamy lotus paste, egg yolk and mochi textured mooncake skin are perfectly done and go wonderfully well together. One of our favorite snow skin mooncakes that we absolutely recommend.
